Osteoporosis and tooth decay are an ever increasing and costly problem in western industrialized nations. Both of these conditions have a similar root cause that lies with the modern processed food diet and over consumption of refined sugars. Refined sugars are especially dangerous since they greatly increase acidity of the blood leading to the leeching of calcium from the bones and teeth. This eventually leads to dental caries and osteoporosis.
People are consuming massive amounts of hidden sugars in packaged and processed foods, sauces, condiments, soda’s, restaurants and countless other places that most would never consider and most fail to factor in when calculating their sugar intake. Take a look at this quote from Familyeducation.com “Every year the typical American consumes between 120 and 150 pounds of refined sugar. That translates to over one-third of a pound a day and 600-plus calories of teeth-rotting, health-destroying sweetness, sort of a contradiction in terms." Even if you don't eat sweets, the amount of refined sugar you may be consuming would no doubt come as a surprise to many. Over two-thirds of the refined sugar used in this country is used in the manufacturing of processed foods. Since most people spend upwards of 90% of their food dollars on processed foods, the majority of what people are eating is loaded with processed, nutrient dead sugar. Many are also not aware of the many hidden sources of sugar and thus calories that is hidden in rather innocuous foods either such as condiments, sauces, syrups and the like. Did you know that a tablespoon of ketchup contains a full teaspoon of sugar? Other items such as breads, soups, cereals, cured meats, hot dogs, lunch meats, salad dressings, spaghetti sauce, crackers, mayonnaise, peanut butter, pickles, frozen pizza, canned fruits and vegetables, tomato juice, and a host of other products all contain sugar. This doesn't even take into account the obvious culprits like candies, cakes, ice cream, cookies, doughnuts, and soda pop.” Refined sugars are sugars that have had their minerals removed leaving just the pure white sugar in its place which is 99.9% pure sucrose. Others example of sugars include turbinado, sucrose, brown sugar, sucrose, maple sugar, maple syrup, molasses, fructose and high fructose corn syrup. The great danger to the bones and teeth when consuming too much sugar occurs when the body leeches or steals calcium from the bones and teeth in order to neutralize the excess acid in the bloodstream. The body uses calcium because calcium is a base which neutralizes an acid. It’s this constant calcium leeching from bones and teeth that eventually leads to osteoporosis and tooth decay. When it comes to tooth decay brushing is only half the battle. Most decay occurs from the inside out, not the outside in. Brushing takes care of the buildup of germs and bacteria that lead to plague on the outside of the teeth, but it does little to prevent internal destruction to the tooth dentin on the inside. It’s this increase in sugar consumption over the past several decades in modern industrialized nations that has caused the epidemic of osteoporosis and dental caries in recent decades. Did you know that drinking a just one 12oz can of soda contains so much sugar that if the body didn’t take emergency action to neutralize excess acid, you would die within two minutes from acidosis! Fluoride is not the answer to cavities and actually does little to prevent them. In fact it may actually make cavities worse. Those who try and convince people that fluoride prevents cavities often point to studies in the 50’s that showed towns that fluoridated their water supplies showed a decrease in dental caries. But they fail to mention that nearly all towns in the US showed a decrease in dental caries during those same years, whether they fluoridated their water supply or not. This decrease was due to greater knowledge about the importance of brushing teeth, not because water supplies were being fluoridated. This internal leeching is why when you go to the dentist you teeth may look fine on the outside but X-ray shows that you have a cavity or need a root canal because the leeching has been going on inside of the tooth for years. How to Prevent Tooth Decay One of the best ways to help prevent internal destruction of the teeth from acids that get under the gum line and through the pores of the teeth is with the use of a a sea salt water solution. Make it fairly strong which is approximately one level teaspoon of natural sea salt with minerals to four ounces of water give or take. Swish it around the mouth for 3-5 minutes once or twice a day. More if you currently have tooth pain as this will help to kill the germs and bacteria inside of the tooth that causing the pain. Many other illnesses are also caused from excess bacteriological buildup in the teeth and under the gum line. This bacteria then gets into the bloodstream causing a general weakening of the immune system and since so many peoples systems are compromised due to the lack of nutrients, minerals, enzymes and living on fast, processed and energy dead foods today, these bacteria get into various organs and parts of the body and can cause real havoc and lead to serious disease, even heart disease and cancer. That is one reason that there is a known connection between heart disease and those with serious dental problems. Another method similar to the sea salt swishing is something called "oil pulling" This is where you use a natural oil such as sesame seed, olive or neem seed oil and swish it around the mouth for 5-10 minutes or until the saliva dilutes it completely. The thicker oil then "pulls" the bacteria out from under the gum line and between the teeth greatly preventing and even helping to reverse decay. The sea salt will do the same things as I've had some teeth that were hurting but no longer do once I practiced these techniques. Regular brushing and using one or both of these methods of removing bacteria from the teeth will go a long way to keeping your teeth as long as possible and even your entire life as nature truly intended when eating REAL foods that grow in from the ground, not found in a box, a bag or from a drive through window. SILICA - Herb For Life To help reverse the tooth decay and bone loss that has occurred the horrid western sugar laden, nutrient EMPTY diets, start taking an herb known as "Horsetail" which contains the highest concentrations of SILICA. Bones are made up of mainly calcium, phosphorous and magnesium but they also contain silica, which is critical to bone re-mineralization. Studies show that taking calcium supplements can actually INCREASE bone loss because without sufficient Silica the body can NOT make use of the extra calcium so it is useless and can even be dangerous. In the 2003 book "Water & Salt" Dr. Barbara Hendel stated: "Silica is the most important trace mineral for human health!" In 1939, the Nobel Price winner for chemistry, Professor Adolf Butenant, proved that life cannot exist without Silica. According to his research in 1972, silica is an essential nutrient and must be supplied continuously from food sources. Silica plays an important role in many body functions and has a direct relationship to mineral absorption. The average human body holds approximately seven grams of silica, a quantity far exceeding the figures for other important minerals such as iron. Both iron and silica are body essential, meaning they are needed for carrying out ongoing metabolic work that is vital to life. Both elements must be continuously supplied. "Osteoporosis is a symptom of the aging process. As calcium in our body system leaches, our bones become brittle and weak. Taking only a calcium supplement cannot correct or stop this threatening and crippling disease because the body cannot assimilate and make use of the calcium without the presence of silica. Evidence suggests that, instead of affecting healing, supplemental mineral calcium, on the contrary, accelerates the leaching away of bone calcium and thus hastens the degenerative process of osteoporosis and similar diseases that affect the supportive and connective tissues in the human body. For osteoporosis, silica can stop the pain and even restore the body’s self repair process. Osteoporosis symptoms attack women primarily after menopause but the degenerative process starts much earlier in their younger days. More women are dying of fractures caused by osteoporosis than of cancer of the breast, cervix, and uterus combined. In osteoporosis, thinning of the bones occurs due to insufficient production of the surrounding protein medium in which calcium salts first deposit. A lack of calcium in the bone matrix leads to enlargement of canals and spaces in the bones, giving the bones a porous, thinned appearance. The weakened bone becomes fragile and may be broken by a minor injury. The bones may even fracture from normal pressure or stress. For purposes of remineralization of damaged bones, it is recommended that a sufficient silica supplement be taken daily. Bones are made up of mainly phosphorus, magnesium and calcium but they also contain silica. Silica is responsible for the depositing of minerals into the bones, especially calcium. It speeds up the healing of fractures and also reduces scarring at the site of a fracture. More and more research evidence shows that through a transmutation process, silica is turned into calcium when it is needed. That is why some scientists refer to silica as a precursor of calcium. Even when calcium is insufficient, the body can turn silica into calcium that the bones need." (http://www.holisticwebs.com/cancer/silica.pdf)Why have we NEVER heard this before....? Why doesn't your doctor or dentist tell you to take silica instead of calcium...simply because they don't WANT you to know about it. I started giving my 80 year mother silica (500mg a day for 4 weeks) and when she had her next bone density scan which was only 4 weeks after her starting the Silica, the doctors were shocked at her density increased by 30%. She had been on a steady decline while taking the useless "OSCAL" and other over the counter supplements. Taking about 500mg to 1000mg of silica or horsetail a day you can actually begin to reverse bone loss but tooth decay. The better your overall health the better these techniques will work. (Contraindications: Pregnant and nursing women or men with prostate cancer should avoid Horsetail Herbal Supplement. This herb should not be used for prolonged periods of time nor in excessive amounts (many times the recommended dosage). Older adults, children and people with cardiac disease or high blood pressure should not use the herb without first consulting a physician. Vitamin K is also a very important nutrient to take to help regenerate bones and teeth. It's often been called "the forgotten vitamin" Taking 100-200mcg at a time a few times a week will further aid in bone remineralization. This can be just as important and critical as taking the Silica and the two work in concert with and support each other. Many physicians suggest 65–80 mcg per day, a level that can be achieved without supplementation by eating vegetables. Vitamin K is needed for proper bone formation and blood clotting, in both cases by helping the body transport calcium. Vitamin K is used by medical doctors when treating an overdose of the drug warfarin. Also, medical doctors prescribe vitamin K to prevent excessive bleeding in people taking warfarin who require surgery. Vitamin K interferes with the action of some prescription blood thinners. People taking these drugs should never supplement vitamin K without consulting a physician. Phylloquinone—the natural vegetable form of vitamin K—has not been linked with any other side effects. I have had teeth that were hurting and would have needed a root canal no longer need them after taking the recommended Silica on a daily basis along with the vitamin K and using either the sea salt wash or oil pulling method. If you have any serious digestion issues such as IBS, you may find the silica aggravating your condition. Start out with one tablet every other day and gradually increase every few weeks to one a day as long as no other complications occur. Numerous other people have reported the same results as myself while using silica, in that teeth that were hurting no longer hurt. They also reported the tightening of loose teeth after taking the Silica and vitamin K. (Always remember to consult your health care practitioner before making any changes to your diet or starting any exercise program. This article is for information purposes only. As people differ, so do results. Always research all drugs and herbs before adding anything new to your diet) The Shaolin and Buddhist monks are reported to have regrown teeth in the past, something which some have doubted because of their strictly vegetarian diets. Herbs that were high in Silica such as horsetail and other greens is one of the main keys to this accomplishment. With the silica, just make sure that you are also taking a multi vitamin or a B complex to prevent vitamin B1 (Thiamine deficiency). In his book "Nutrition and Degeneration" using nutrition alone, Dr. Weston A. Price reduced the rate of tooth decay 250 times in seventeen individuals who had severe tooth decay. In this group, approximately half of all teeth had been affected by decay prior to Price’s nutritional program. After the program, only two new cavities formed within a three year time period putting the rate of recurrence at 0.4%. 1 Dr. Weston Price documented how our modern nutrition program is a primary cause of disease and tooth decay. The theory that tooth decay is caused by germs and bacteria is outdated and it does not hold water. The reason is that germs do not like to eat nutrient devoid foods. Germs and bacteria need sustenance just like we do. So when the dental associations say that germs cause tooth decay by eating certain foods and producing acid, it is unreasonable to believe since germs cannot eat devitalized foods like white sugar and white flour - the foods that we know cause tooth decay. Weston Price was widely respected in his time, and frequently published in many dental journals, including several articles in the Journal of the American Dental Association. Why have his wise words been forgotten, and what did he teach us? Three Important Food Factors Dr. Price documented that both water-soluble and fat-soluble vitamins are missing from our modern diets. Of particular note, is the near complete absence of fat-soluble vitamins in our modern diet. Without eating those special foods, and it does not have to be large amounts of them, but frequently, and enough to fulfill your bodies needs, you can be susceptible to tooth decay, gum disease, and other diseases. Eating special foods with fat-soluble vitamins won’t cure tooth decay in themselves, but they are a part of the cure.
Our modern diet is so lacking in these special foods, and they are not consumed in regular amounts, so it is no wonder why our bodies degenerate. Vitamin B1 (to prevent Thiamine deficiency) OTHER BENEFITS OF SILICA Silica has inhibitory effects on coronary diseases. Organic vegetal silica supplementation helps repair and maintain vital lung tissues and protects them from pollution. By maintaining or restoring the elasticity of lung tissues, silica reduces inflammation in bronchitis. It acts as a cough decreasing agent. Silica tones the upper respiratory tract (nose, pharynx, larynx) and reduces swelling because of its positive action on the lymphatic system. Silica supplementation keeps menopause free of stress and helps to prevent many unwanted side-effects of menopause; paramount being the development of osteoporosis. In men, too, the nervous system and glandular network will gradually undergo changes that cause deterioration of vital body functions during menopause. This can also be alleviated by using silica. Silica works with other antioxidants to prevent premature aging and to preserve youthfulness. New researches have found that antioxidants, like organic vegetal silica, protect against harmful radiation. Silica can help prevent kidney stones and heal infections of the urinary tract. It is a natural diuretic which can increase excretion of urine by 30 percent, thus flushing the water-excreting system and restoring normal function to these vital organs. The presence of sufficient silica in the intestines will reduce inflammation of the intestinal tract. It can cause disinfection in the case of stomach and intestinal catarrh and ulcers. Silica can prevent or clear up diarrhea and its opposite, constipation. Vegetal Silica will help normalize hemorrhoidal tissues. In regulating and normalizing the bowels, silica has a pleasant side effect; it can alleviate lower back pain, which often troubles the elderly. Silica proves effective with female discharge, abscesses and ulcers in the genital area and cervix, as well as mastitis (especially for breast feeding mothers). The intake of silica acts as a supportive treatment for inflammation of the middle ear. Because of the beneficial effectiveness on the lymphatic system, silica can be used for swelling of the lymph nodes in the throat. Silica can stimulate the immune system. Silica can normalize circulation and regulate high blood pressure (hypertension). Silica can decrease vertigo, headache, tinnitus (buzzing of the ears) and insomnia. Silica can help diabetes by promoting synthesis of elastase inhibitor by the pancreas. Silica can help arterial disease by strengthening the blood vessels. Silica can help prevent Tuberculosis. By improving the elasticity of the joints, silica helps rheumatism. Silica can help avoiding or alleviating Alzheimer’s disease by preventing the body from absorbing aluminum and may flush out aluminum from the tissues. Silica can stimulate cell metabolism and division. Silica delays the aging process of the tissues; in younger people, the tissues typically contain more silica than in older people. Silica increases mobility and reduces pain in osteoarthritis and sclerotic conditions. Silica beautifies hair with shine, elasticity and strength. Silica prevents wrinkles. PRECAUTIONS: The use of herbs is a time honored approach to strengthening the body and treating disease. Herbs, however, contain components that can trigger side effects and interact with other herbs, supplements, or medications. For these reasons, you should take herbs with care, under the supervision of a qualified health care provider trained in the field of botanical medicine. Horsetail remedies prepared from Equisetum arvense are generally considered safe when used properly. Another species of horsetail, however, called Equisetum palustre is poisonous to horses. To be safe, never take that form of horsetail. Be sure to buy products made by an established company with a good reputation. When possible, select products with guaranteed potency or standardized extracts. Prolonged use of even the safe form of horsetail (E. arvense) is also not advised. Taking horsetail by mouth may cause levels of vitamin B1 (thiamin) in the body to drop. If you take horsetail on a regular basis, you should also take a quality multivitamin or at least a B complex supplement daily. People with heart or kidney disorders, diabetes, or gout should not use horsetail. Do not drink alcohol regularly while taking horsetail, because horsetail may cause levels of thiamin to drop. Horsetail may flush potassium out of the body so people who are at risk for low potassium levels should not take Horsetail. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should not take horsetail. Possible Interactions: The effects of horsetail may enhance the effects of certain medications. For this reason, people taking prescription medications should not take horsetail without first consulting a health care provider. Alcohol -- People who are chronic drinkers may have low levels of vitamin B1 (thiamin). Because horsetail can also cause low levels of thiamin, you should not take horsetail if you drink heavily. Nicotine patches or gum -- Horsetail contains some nicotine, and should not be used if you are also using nicotine replacement patches or chewing gum. Digoxin (Lanoxin) -- Horsetail may cause low levels of potassium (hypokalemia) in the body. People with heart arrhythmias and those taking digoxin should not use horsetail. Diuretics (water pills) -- Horsetail may have weak diuretic properties, meaning it helps rid the body of excess fluid. People who take diuretics should not take horsetail due to the risk of dehydration or low potassium (hypokalemia). Lithium -- By interfering with the body's ability to get rid of Lithium, taking Horsetail with Lithium may result in a dangerous build up of Lithium in the body. Alternative Names: Bottle-brush; Equisetum arvense; Horse willow; Paddock-pipes; Pewterwort; Scouring rush; Shave grass; Toadpipe RAW FOODS There are also reports of elderly women reversing osteoporosis by going on a raw foods diet. This is similar to what happened to my own mother as detailed above, except her bone density increase happened by taking the silica and vitamin K alone.
